While the majority of our ingredients are certified organic and non-GMO, some ingredients may be wildcrafted and/or cultivated without chemicals, pesticides, genetic modification, or radiation treatment. Wildcrafted ingredients are harvested from their natural habitats while being careful to leave the mother plant(s) in good condition to ensure the practice is regenerative and protects endangered species. However, they cannot be certified as such because they are not under the control of growers and processors. These ingredients go through rigorous organoleptic testing, pesticide, chemical, and heavy metal testing to ensure purity.

Proposition 65 (Prop 65) is a California right-to-know act that requires the public to be made aware when a product contains one of more than 900 chemicals that are known by the State of California to potentially cause cancer, birth defects, and reproductive harm when exposed at certain levels. To be added to the Prop 65 list, the chemical must be present above a threshold that is about 1,000 times below national safety standards. Enacted in 1986 and formerly known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act, Prop 65 is not a federal law, but rather an act meant to inform consumers. Prop 65 extends beyond drinking water and food: Many products that are generally considered to be safe—for instance, candles, furniture, and even sunglasses—have Prop 65 warnings, and may only contain one of the approximately 900 chemicals on the list at a very low level. At Apothékary, all our ingredients are natural products from the ground, which can have natural exposure to heavy metals like lead, which is widely present in a variety of soils. The important thing to note is a chemical does not have to be intentionally added to a product to prompt the Prop 65 warning.
